Should We Match for Family Photos?

It's a common question; "should we match for our family photos?"

You have the session booked, and the location picked. But what in the world are you and your family going to wear? We love it when clients ask for an opinion or tips. It can be a struggle to figure out whether everyone should match or not. Our professional suggestion is not to match, but to coordinate instead.

Begin with choosing a color palette, not matching colors. Set the outfit choices based on this color scheme. It doesn’t have to be difficult – light or dark, choose a broad theme, and go from there. This ensures each family member keeps their unique style while looking good as a group. The point is for your family to fit together and not stick out in a bad way in a photograph. Not every color fits or works for every person! Just relax, and above all else, be comfortable. The emotion in your photos is essential to everyone looking happy and comfortable.

1. Start with a Base Color:

Begin by selecting a base color for the outfits. This could be a neutral tone such as navy, gray, or beige. The base color will serve as the anchor for the overall look.

2. Add Accent Colors:

Once you have the base color, add one or two accent colors to the palette. These can be bolder shades that complement the base color. For example, if the base is gray, good accent colors could be mustard yellow and burgundy.

3. Consider Patterns and Textures:

Mix in some understated patterns and textures to add visual interest. Light stripes, soft florals, and subtle patterns can work well together. Just make sure they don't clash or overpower the overall look.

4. Dress for the Season:

Take into account the season and location of the photo session. Lighter and brighter colors may work well for spring or summer, while warmer and richer tones may be suitable for fall or winter.

5. Avoid Logos and Busy Patterns:

Steer clear of clothing with large logos or busy patterns that can be distracting in photos. Solid colors and simpler patterns tend to photograph better.

6. Coordinate Accessories:

Don't forget about accessories! Coordinating accessories like scarves, hats, or jewelry can bring the whole look together. Ensure that accessories complement the chosen color palette.

7. Check the Fit:

Make sure each family member's outfit fits well and is comfortable. Avoid clothing that is too tight or too loose, as comfort plays a key role in capturing natural and relaxed expressions.

8. Test the Color Palette:

Lay out everyone's outfits together to see how the colors interact. If possible, take a few test photos to see how the colors look in different lighting conditions.

9. Be Mindful of the Background:

Consider the location of the photo session and choose colors that will stand out against the background. You want your family to be the focal point of the photo.

Remember, the key is to have fun with the and let each family member's personality shine through. When everyone feels comfortable and confident in their outfits, it will reflect in the photos, creating a beautiful and timeless family portrait.
